Food Packaging: There are several major benefits over current thermoformed and molded packaging.The insulating quality provides benefits for all manner of refrigerated and frozen foods (especially handling abuse). Using food grade carbon dioxide, this process has already received a "go ahead" from FDA. Ovenable/microwavable packaging can be made with common APET giving it a lower cost than CPET and being very competitive with Polypropylene (PP). Retail Packaging (non-food): Thermoplastics using MicroGREEN's process can be used for deep draw shapes with steep sides (5 degrees from vertical). The material is flexible and provides a "cushioning effect" to protect the contents. This is a great way to make cushioning inserts and utilize recycled material, too. Automotive: By reducing the material used up to 80%, you can imagine the importance of making light weight parts for the automotive industry, especially with rising fuel costs and economy standards. For example, expanded PET (EPET) could be formed as a headliner and withstand temperatures up to 400° F. and provide added insulating and sound-deadening qualities. At the end of the cars useful life, the EPET headliner could be easily recycled. Building Supplies: Expanded thermoplastic polymers using MicroGREEN's process provide insulation and sound-limiting benefits. Large expanded thermoplastic sheets could be used to construct wall panels or even a house wrap. Thermoformed, intricate panels could be made to simulate a Victorian 'tin' ceiling. Lighting: The natural integral skin that forms using the MicroGREEN process provides excellent reflective qualities. Combine that with high heat (PET can withstand temperatures up to 400° F.) and formability, a whole new class of light fixtures could be produced. Appliances: ABS and other thermoplastics are used in the manufacture of many household appliances. A reduction in the amount of material needed to produce thermoformed parts can contribute to keeping cost down. Speakers: Combining the deep draw capability with the lightness and resilience of a thermoplastic using this process, you can imagine the potential for creating a unique new speaker cone. The controllable nature (density, skin thickness, etc.) of the MicroGREEN process could allow for excellent fine-tuning of the sound characteristics. Electronics: Expanded PET, with its glossy surface, is currently being used as a screen component in the production of large screen televisions and monitors. There are many other applications in electronics and plastic foamed with MicroGREEN's process could be used to produce trays for production of electronic components. Aircraft: A lightweight material is very desirable for aircraft. Polyether Imide (PEI) is a thermoplastic with fire-retardant qualities that is currently used in aircraft construction. PEI has been shown to work with MicroGREEN's microcellular technology. |
